Abstract
Urban expansion, driven by increasing migration to cities, is a key indicator of development and modernization. It facilitates economic growth, entrepreneurship, and technological advancements, making urbanization an essential aspect of progress. However, rapid urbanization also presents significant challenges, particularly in the social, environmental, and economic domains. One of the most concerning consequences is urban sprawl, which alters land use and land cover over time, leading to severe environmental degradation. The transformation of rural and peri-urban areas into urban centers often results in deforestation, loss of biodiversity, increased pollution, and the depletion of natural resources. Additionally, uncontrolled urban expansion can strain existing infrastructure, leading to inadequate housing, traffic congestion, and challenges in waste management. While urbanization is inevitable, it is crucial to implement sustainable planning and governance strategies to mitigate its negative impacts. This study explores the dual impact of urbanization, emphasizing the need for balanced policies that promote economic growth while ensuring environmental sustainability and improved quality of life for urban residents.
