EXAMINING THE IMPACT OF RECORDS MANAGEMENT SKILLS ON THE PRESERVATION OF INFORMATION RESOURCES IN PUBLIC UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES IN RIVERS STATE

Abstract

The study examined records management skills as correlate of longevity of information resources in public university libraries in Rivers State. The study was guided by two (2) objectives, research questions and hypotheses. The researcher adopted a correlational research design. The population of the study consisted of 58 librarians and library officers of the three (3) university libraries in Rivers State. There was no sampling since the entire 58 librarians and library officers in the university libraries was studied through census method. The instruments used for data collection was a self-designed questionnaires titled β€œRecords Management Skills (RMSQ) and Longevity of Information Resources (LIRQ) Questionnaires. The questionnaires were structured and validated and tested for reliability through Cronbach’s Alpha method which produced a coefficient value of 0.95. and 0.89 respectively.Β  Mean values were used to answer the research questions, while Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The result of the study showed that there is a significant relationship between ICT competence skill, organizational skill and longevity of information resources in the public university libraries in Rivers State. It was concluded that records management skills significantly enhance longevity of information resources in public university libraries in Rivers State. Based on the findings, it was recommended amongst others that; Management of Public University Libraries in Rivers State should prioritize training and development programmes aimed at enhancing ICT competence among library staff. This could include workshops, courses, and certifications in information technology relevant to library management and information systems
